Beijing welcomes and respects senior travelers.
Preparation Before Your Trip
Tiananmen Square
- Attraction reservations: Some attractions may need reservation. Booking tickets can avoid spending time doing nothing but waiting.
- Accommodation: A hotel with convenient transport, good conditions (room and breakfast) is better.
- Catering: All kinds of restaurants can be found in Beijing. Selecting where you want to eat before your trip can save time and energy. See our well-selected restaurants in Beijing.
- Making a plan for your trip: All China Highlights' Beijing tours are fully customizable. Or see our tailor-make form to design your tour of Beijing. Don't make your schedule tight.
- What to carry: your insurance policy, travel advisor's phone number, necessary medication, personal contact details, and a hotel's name card. Don't carry too many things, as it may reduce your enjoyment of the tour.
When to Go
Beautiful leaves of Xiangshan Park in autumn
Autumn (September–November) is the golden time for traveling around Beijing (and not just because of the fall colors), thanks to the comfortable weather. November is the beginning of the off travel season in China, so the attractions in Beijing are not as crowded.
Beijing's attractions stay open all year round, but summer can be uncomfortably hot and crowded, and winter very cold. See our Beijing weather and tourism information for useful suggestions.
Choice of Attractions
Recommended historical places for cultural tours (including activities): the Forbidden City (see imperial exhibitions and ancient architecture), Summer Palace (cruise on the lake), Qianmen Street (shop for souvenirs and feast on snacks), the Great Wall, the hutongs (make dumplings, learn Chinese calligraphy…), and Temple of Heaven Park (learn tai chi). See also top museums in Beijing.
Natural attractions can also be found in and around the city: Beijing Zoo (see giant pandas), Jingdong Grand Canyon, Shidu Karst Valley, ...

- 4-Day Beijing Private Tour to Visit the Great Wall at Night
- Half-Day Beijing Walking Tour in a Neighborhood
- The Great Wall at Mutianyu: It is not as steep as other parts of the Great Wall. You can take the cableway there from the foot to the top of the mountain, while appreciating the natural scenery along the Great Wall.
- Stroll in the hutongs or take a rickshaw: A rickshaw is a traditional and relaxing way to see Beijing's old alleyways, especially popular with senior travelers.
- 6-Day Beijing Winter Tour with Skiing in a 2022 Olympic Winter Games Venue
- Have breakfast before leaving the hotel for convenience, and avoid being too adventurous with foods.
- Don't take the subway or city buses during peak times (7–9am and 5–7pm). China Highlights tours include private transport and hotel pick-ups and drop-offs to cover all your transport needs. If traveling on your own, China Highlights suggests you take taxis to your destinations, which is more convenient and safer.
- Tell your tour guide what you need, and whether the pace is suitable for you.
